Course Description: This course will be a review of operations on rational numbers, decimals, percents, exponents, radical and scientific notation. One and two variable equations, inequalities, polynomials, factoring, and quadratic equations will also be covered.

Pre-requisites: Passing score on basic arithmetic proficiency test or MTH 011

Required text: McKeague, Charles. P., Intermediate Algebra (6th Edition) Saunders College Publishing, 2003.

Additional requirements: any scientific calculator (if you will be taking Elementary Functions a graphing calculator is highly recommended). Students should also have graph paper.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the student will be familiar with:
• Order of operations and set notation
• Properties of real numbers and the real number line
• Graphing and solving linear equations (and inequalities) with one and two variables
• Graphing and solving equations with absolute value
• Functions and function notation
• Exponents
• Operations and factoring of polynomials
• Operations and equations with rational expressions
• Rational exponents, roots, and radicals
• Quadratic equations
• Applications of all of the above

Course requirements, penalties for late submissions, and absences:
Quizzes (3): 20%
Tests (2): 30%
Final Exam: 40%
Attendance/Participation: 10%

Students are expected to read each chapter and try all HW problems. The best way to learn mathematics is by practice! The answers to the odd questions, chapter review, and cumulative review questions are in the back of the book. Students are expected to check their answers before class, and encouraged to try additional problems for practice. Any questions will be discussed during the next class.
Attendance will be taken daily. Excessive absences (and lateness) can be detrimental to the final grade. Make-ups will only be given for excused absences; please plan accordingly.

NOTE: There will be no class on Tuesday July 3rd. The make-up class for this day will by Friday July 11th. This is posted in the accelerated schedule so all students are expected to attend class.
