Course Description:
This course is designed to provide you with a clear understanding of the major concepts and skills that are commonly taught in elementary school classes. The primary goals o the course are for you to develop multiple representations and models of mathematical concepts, to become proficient at mathematical problem solving, and to be able to communicate mathematical ideas effectively. You will hopefully become confident in your ability to do mathematics and that you develop a positive attitude toward this subject as a result of engaging mathematics activities.


Required text: Bennett & Nelson, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Contempory Approach, 5th edition, McGraw-Hill.

Additional requirements: any scientific calculator (graphing calculator OK)

Chapter 8 - Probability
Chapter 9 - Geometric Figures
Chapter 10 - Measurement
Chapter 11 - Motions in Geometry


Course requirements, penalties for late submissions, and absences:
Homework: 10%
Quizzes: 15%
Tests: 50%
Projects: 25%

Occasional problems will be collected and graded, which will be worth 10% of your overall grade. Late homework will NOT be accepted. Attendance will be taken daily. In accordance with the registrar's rules, four consecutive absences will be reported to the Registrar. Excessive absences can be detrimental to the final grade. Make-ups will only be given for excused absences; please plan accordingly.
