MTH 301 - Probability and Statistics
Dr. J. Bready

Course Description: This course introduces the student to the fundamental concepts of probability and statistics, including mean, variance and standard deviation, graphical representation of data, distributions, correlation and regression, probability, inferential statistics and hypothesis testing. Emphasis will be placed both on computation and interpretation. Simulations and small group activities will be used to help students understand these concepts. These activities will show students applications of probability and statistics in fields such as mathematics, business, education, and natural and social sciences. Simulations will also be used to help grasp concepts in probability theory.

Pre-requisites:
MTH 252

Required text: Yates, Moore, and McCabe, The Practice of Statistics (3rd Edition), Freeman, 2008.

Additional requirements:
TI-83/84 or TI-89 (83 preferred)

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

* Understand methods of descriptive statistics, apply them appropriately for data analysis, and interpret results
* Be aware of the historical development of probability (the problem of the points)
* Apply fundamental concepts of mathematical probability
* Understand and analyze discrete and continuous probability distributions
* Use appropriate methods of hypothesis testing and inferential statistics and interpret results
* Use the graphing calculator as a tool for all of the above

Course requirements, penalties for late submissions, and absences:
Homework/Groupwork: 30%
Final Exam: 20%
Tests (4): 50%

Some homework problems or small group activities will be collected and graded. Occasional late homework will be accepted, but it must be handed in before the next class. Attendance will be taken daily. Excessive absences can be detrimental to the final grade. Make-ups will only be given for excused absences; please plan accordingly.

Approximate Test Schedule (some sections may be skipped)
Test 1 - Chapters 1-2
Test 2 - Chapters 3-5
Test 3 - Chapters 6-8
Test 4 - Chapters 9-10
Cumulative Final Exam (including Chapter 11)
