CIT 100 Computer Competency – Independent Study

 

 

Description:

This is an independent study course in which the student will develop computer competency skills on his own by following the text book exercises that will include familiarity with the fundamentals of word processing and the ability to access the Internet and World Wide Web. 

 

 

Texts:

1. Microsoft Word 2003, Illustrated Series Complete, Course Tech.  
2. Internet Research, Illustrated Series, 3rd  Edition, Course Tech.
3. Assignment sheets from me.

 

 

Student Files:

2 sets of files –Disk A for Windows Explorer and Disk B for Word and Internet Research will be provided.  These files come on 2 forms of media – one with 3.5 floppies and one with CDs.  They can also be copied from the folder entitled CIT100 in my folder Timm on the P drive in our labs by logging onto the my.MSMC system.

 

 

Access to WebCT

Information and 5 quizzes will be available using WebCT which can be accessed on campus by clicking on WebCT from the my.msmc.edu page or from off campus by typing the http://my.msmc.edu

 

 

Student Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:
            Using Word:

1.      Create nested folders to save files

2.      Create and format documents

3.      Create documents using text, lines, shapes, and bullets

4.      Create documents with clip art and Internet pictures

5.      Create documents containing tables with text and numeric data

6.      Create an advertisement that uses Word Art, graphics, and shapes

Using Internet:

1.      Demonstrate an understanding of the Internet

2.      Send and receive emails with and without attachments

3.      Navigate the Web

4.      Evaluate the credibility of Web sites

5.      Gather information using simple and advanced search strategies

6.      Create a document that demonstrates correct methods of documenting information gathered from the Internet.

 

Procedures to Attain Student Outcomes:

Using the required texts and computer laboratories, the student will perform exercises and projects as described in the assignments and take a final exam that will assess the above outcomes.

 

 

Grading:

This course is graded PASS/FAIL with the passing grade being at least 70%.  This percentage must be attained in both the daily coursework of projects and quizzes combined and the final in order to pass the course.  Late projects will receive partial credit up to one half the assigned points during the first two weeks of being late.  After that no credit will be given.

Logistics:

 

The course work must be completed within a traditional semester (12 weeks) including the taking of the comprehensive exam which will be given in the lab at a common time at the end of each semester.  Each week either a quiz or some project(s) are to be turned in to me either via e-mail, delivered to my mailbox, or slid under my office door. 

 

Independent work is expected; all individuals involved in copied work receive zero for the assignment.
