Math 207 Elementary Statistics

Course Description:

This course introduces the student to learning the techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics and how to apply them.

Text:

Social Statistics, An Introduction Using SPSS for Windows, 2nd Edition,  J. Richard  Kendrick, Jr. Mayfield Publishing

Computer/
Calculator:

Access to SPSS in the labs and a calculator is required.  A TI 35,TI-36X , TI - 80, TI - 81, TI – 82,  TI-83, TI-85, TI-89 is recommended.

Student Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to use the parameters of descriptive statistics, the procedures of inferential statistics and the calculator and SPSS to support them.  More specifically the student will be able to:

                Statistics:

1.        Use the fundamentals of research

2.        Understand what leads to misleading or erroneous statistics

3.        Classify variables by levels of measurement

4.        Analyze frequency distributions

5.        Develop measures of central tendency

6.        Develop measure of dispersion

7.        Analyze contingency tables

8.        Determine correlations

9.        Determine linear regression analysis

10.     Make inferences for single variables

11.     Make inferences between sample means

Technology:

1.        Use SPSS software to support all of the above

2.        Use a calculator to support all of the above

Surveys and Analysis of Data:

1.        Understand how to construct a survey to capture data that is relevant

2.        Understand the sources of error

3.        Understand how to discuss data in meaningful terms

4.        Determine how to make conclusions based on data that are significant

Procedure to Attain Student Outcomes:

Using the required text, calculator, and computer, the student will perform homework and projects as described in the assignments and take quizzes, tests, and a final on all aspects of the above outcomes.

Grading:

Your grade will be determined by the ratio of the total number of points that you earn divided by the total points possible. Points will be earned approximately by:

3 Tests

       100 Points each

4 - 5 Quizzes

       100 – 125 Points

Homework

       40 – 80 Points

Projects

       35 Points each

Grade Determination:

Attendance: Punctuality and attendance throughout the entire class is required.  Since one cannot participate if he is not in attendance, participation points will be deducted each absence without documented excuses.  Only with contact to me prior and with documented substantial reason will an exam be rescheduled for make-up.  Quizzes will not be made up; however, the lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

Homework:  Assignments may be collected and some or all of the problems will be graded.  Late projects will receive partial credit during the first two weeks of being late.  After that no credit will be given.  Independent work is expected; all individuals involved in copied work receive zero for the assignment.
